SUGGESTIONS FOR WRITING TASK 1 – LINE CHART
Topic :
The graph below gives information about US government spending on research between 1980 and 2008.
Summarize the information and write at least 150 words.

Topic analysis:
– For exercises that combine more than 2 charts, candidates should divide the test into several sections, each section corresponding to a type of chart.
– For the type of questions that contain a timeline, candidates need to find trends that change over the years. There are usually 4 types of trends:
+ Uptrend
+ Downtrend
+ The trend remains the same
+ Fluctuating trend (increase, decrease continuously)
– Candidates need to determine the position (order) of each quantity mentioned in the lesson.
– In the above problem, for the line chart, we can see that except for other components, all components record an increase in costs.
The majority of government budgets are invested in health research, while investment in science accounts for the least.
Sample reference:

Illustrated in the line chart is the amount of US government expenditure spent on various investigation subjects over the course of 28 years starting from 1980.
Overall, with the exception of other items, all the given categories experience an upturn in expenses. While the majority of government outlays were forked out on health research, the reverse was true for general science.
Most remarkable, health research registered a swift rise in the amount of government budget from approximately 7 billion dollars to over 20 billion dollars in the year 2004. Similarly but less strikingly, the remaining categories including space, energy and general science witnessed the same pattern in the allocation of research budget, each recorded an increase of 5 billion dollars over the years. Meanwhile, there was a downward trend in the corresponding figure of others, from about 8 billion dollars to just 5 billion dollars in the year 2008.
As can be seen, the greatest amount of government spending was invested in health research, reaching the peak of nearly 23 billion dollars in 2004 as opposed to that of general science, whose investigation outlays hovered around 3 to 5 billion dollars over the survey timespan.
